Living The American Dream Then And Now...

Today in class we watched a video called "Class Dismissed". This video showed us viewers how race and gender are played in a working class. For example, women and men of different races and cultural are all viewed differently on T.V. shows, such as the "Fresh Prince of Belair". On this particular show it is viewed as wealthy middle class african americans who are living the american dream and having a good life. The video "Class Dismisssed" also talked about how the american dream is played out through the media, how women and their class is viewed on television shows such as "Roseanne", "Friends, and "Sex in the City"; which show a variety of how women work hard but are always getting paid less than the men. After watching this video it brought my attention to how race and gender are played in different working classes on television shows that I watch on my free time. One show that I thought that showed a good example of this is "Sister Sister" on disney channel because they are a middle class african american family where both parents work and the sisters go to school and have jobs of their own. Which results in the basic life that anyone lives in because people choose wether they want to be in a low, middle, or upper class society and everyone knows that living in a lower class in poverty is bad. I choose this T.V. show because it fit right in with the different types of roles that african americans play when shown on T.V. For example, back in the late days, african americans and whites were not seen very wealthy and living in a middle class world, but now in today's society its totally different because they only show wealthy living middle and upper class families. Lower class families are often discluded from this. Overall I think that it does matter how much money a women and a man makes because it affects their future to wether or not they are going to be wealthy and live a happy life.

Teenage Girls In The Media

Why is it that girls want to be thinner then their actually weight? Diet pills, surgery, and makeup? This is a contributing factor to why girls think their not good enough and that they are over weight. If you look at magaazines such as "Cosmo Girl", and "Teen People"etc., they all have some kind of advertisment for younger girls to stay fit and look sexy. For example, there are ads that talk about hydroxycut and how in just a couple of weeks you can start to see results. I think this is a serious issue because young teenage girls dont understand the different types of risk factors for a strong medication like this and alot of the time their parents and doctors don't even know that they are taking this. Also, this problem has been pointed out throughout the media showing us viewers how girls look at themselves by looking at famous celeberties and how they got that way because they did this and that so which influences a young teenage girl to go through these extremeties. Overall, I think something should happen so girls will stop dieing to be like celeberties and spending money for their breasts to be done and lipo suction. In order to do this these advertisments should not be shown. As as you see today as younger girls are growing up, their watching t.v. shows, movies, and commercials where girls are big chested, little waist, and the stomach with excess skin hanging out. Below are some interesting pictures that I found that I thought would be very appropriate for this topic.

Hardworking Mothers

Have you ever watched T.V. commercials and noticed that all the female commercials have to do with the role that they play? For example, women are seen either cooking, cleaning, or doing some type of housework and the men are isolated from the commercials because they are'nt the main purpose. After doing some research i have noticed alot of these commercials being advertised and I think that its true because if you look around there are very seldom chores that men do. You dont see them taking care of their sick children in the commercials or cooking. Basicly, the role of a mother is to stay at home cook and clean and take care of the children, while the father goes to work and brings home money for the family. If you click on the link below you will see a advertisment showing a hardworking mother whose cleaning the house with a swiffer mop. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OBKkDb7ONBM. As you can see a women's life is revolved around cleaness and she can't stand any dirt in her home. Overall as you can see alot of people who watch T.V. commercials have'nt noticed the way advertisers set there commercials up and the purpose of isolating the man because he does not have the gender role that a women has.
