y is it that girls want to be thinner then their actually weight? Diet pills, surgery, and makeup? This is a contributing factor to why girls think their not good enough and that they are over weight. If you look at magaazines such as "Cosmo Girl", and "Teen People"etc., they all have some kind of advertisment for younger girls to stay fit and look sexy. For example, there are ads that talk about hydroxycut and how in just a couple of weeks you can start to see results. I think this is a serious issue because young teenage girls dont understand the different types of risk factors for a strong medication like this and alot of the time their parents and doctors don't even know that they are taking this. Also, this problem has been pointed out throughout the media showing us viewers how girls look at themselves by looking at famous celeberties and how they got that way because they did this and that so which influences a young teenage girl to go through these extremeties. Overall, I think something should happen so girls will stop dieing to be like celeberties and spending money for their breasts to be done and lipo suction. In order to do this these advertisments should not be shown. As as you see today as younger girls are growing up, their watching t.v. shows, movies, and commercials where girls are big chested, little waist, and the stomach with excess skin hanging out. Below are some interesting pictures that I found that I thought would be very appropriate for this topic.

ReplyDeleteI think it's an interesting topic to talk about because it's an issue that everyone can relate to. As advertisers, it's their job to market their products. But as consumers it is our always our job to buy their products even if we know they won't work? Or if they are hazardous to our health? The media industry is putting a lot of pressure on adolescence girls who are not quite comfortable in their own skin. The problem with society today is, it's becoming more acceptable to be thinner and to be more conscious about your appearance. Most people don't really think about what's going on when they buy their beauty products, it's just a natural response. It seems as though these advertisers have a bit of subliminal messaging behind their products. For instance, let's market pretty pink lipstick for an 8 year old girl so she can begin to wear make-up earlier, and be more self conscious of her appearance. The media portrays celebrities as our "role models" when in reality some of them aren't really setting much of an example. I'm not saying being pretty and healthy isn't good. What I am saying is they're taking it to the extreme with the plastic surgeries and the eating disorders. They're not letting people feel good about being in their own natural beautiful skin. Embrace your beauty and don't believe everything the media has to say...then again, that's always easier said than done.
