In today's society the adverage child spent watching t.v. is 75% of boys and girls from the age of 18 and under. I believe that children are watching too much t.v. and it's effecting who they are. For example, I found an article about televisions impact on children and how they act after seeing inappropriate things on t.v. Violence was brought up in this article and parent's are allowing their child to watch violent acts and crimes on t.v. A lot of kids think that it's real and not animated because once they see it in real life they believe that they can be like spiderman. In this article researchers have found three responses to the way that media affects children. First was "the increased fear of a child". Second was "desentization to real world violence". Lastly, "increased aggressive behavior". With all three of these responses I believe that this is a major problem and something must be done. I mean you have kids bringing guns to school because they see movies were people kill one another. You have them bullying and fighting aggressively because their favorite action hero's do it and they want to be just like them. Overall, it doesn't make sense for these young children to be acting the way they are and the parents are the problem. If i was a parent I wounld not be letting my 6 year old watch wrestling or any type of violence until they were in their teens or old enough to understand. Also, parent's don't understand that watching all this t.v. and violence effects a childs development because if they are watching and listening to things that are inappropiate then it will affect their social skills when getting older. Sometimes children play with the remote and flip through shows and sexual content appears. How are you going to explain that to your child and how they are too young. Parent's need to step up and do their jobs as being a successful parent.

ReplyDeleteThe problem with this is that some kids cannot tell the distinction between what's real, and what's fake. Some of the shows that kids are watching now are in fact too violent and are giving kids the wrong message. The media is all about being powerful and making money. They portray men who are super masculine and buff holding machine guns in a lot of movies, etc. If there are rating systems for movies, there should be a better rating system for television shows. If the shows are too graphic, kids shouldn't be able to watch them. The problem with this is a lot of kids watch television when their parents aren't home to entertain themselves, so the parents cannot always monitor what their kids have been watching. Then again, with all the new technology there are parental blocks for the television and computer. So I agree with Kayla that parents need to do something about it. Parents would be upset if they got a phone call saying that their kid was acting violent at school. So how is watching violent television shows or movies any different? Kids who watch too much television don't do as well in school because their used to watching things they like, not listing to their teacher lecture.
