Teens and Tanning = Cancer = Death

Recently Maryland has passed a law with teens tanning in beds under the age of 18. Im glad that this law was passed because there are too many young girls tanning and they either do not wear googles or they do not use lotion which is a major risk factor for skin cancer. Teens today don't understand what it means to be safe in the sun and getting the right amont of vitamin D possible without over exposing themselves to too much sunlight. I am currently working at a tanning salon and i see people that come to tan everyday which is bad for skin and causes more and more skin cancer and possibly death. Now since that new law was passed anyone under the age of 18 must have their parents sign a consent form allowing him or her to tan. Which to me basicly says ohh it's okay to watch my child get cancer and die. I really don't understand it some people just dont have any common sense or respect for their self. There is a recent article that I found to be interesting on tanning beds and cancer. It is said that "teens who have tanned in their teen and 20's the risk of melanoma is 75%. Check ot the article below:

Here are some very interesting video clips about skin cancer and tanning:

  2. I definitely think that tanning beds are cancerous but isn’t the sun itself the same? Yes we have to always be aware of changes in our body’s and always get checked out. Tanning is something everyone does, men and women. Too much is bad, but once in a while isn't the worst thing in the world. Evryone has their own opinion. Girls under the age of 18 should not go into tanning beds, I agree with that law that came out. Parents should be more careful with letting teens tan at such a young age.

  3. wow I don't get the poin t of hurting yourself. I mean if people know that these things are bad for them then why do it. I agree it's a lack of respect for themselves. Maybe Maryland should have passed the law stating that people under the age of 25 witho or without the consent of a parent should not have the right to tan. Then that would help cut down on the cancer rate and melanoma for people of our age group.

  4. I've always been leary of tanning salons knowing that they're hazardous to your health. I think that it's a good idea that you have to be 18 to go tanning without parental supervision because parents may not know how many times their kids are really tanning. The media has always made people especially girls feel self-conscious of their bodies. The media makes girls think that if they have tan skin they're beautiful. It'll make women more desirable to men? What the media hasn't disclosed is how harmful tanning beds are! Why do girls and guys think this good for them? Most of the time people turn orange and after years of tanning your skin will be leathery. It can start out as a mole on your body that you may overlook, until it starts spreading and you find out you've got skin cancer. I'm very much against tanning beds because I have a 30% risk of getting skin cancer and I would never want to risk that even more by tanning. The media is all about sex, and desire and instills that in girls at all ages. If anyone has heard of Miss Maryland she came to my H.S and warned us about the dangers of tanning beds. She said she tanned everyday for years and developed very serious skin cancer and went through many surgeries to try to get rid of it. She has now scarred up her body and regrets ever stepping foot in the salon. She was a big proponent for passing the law for being 18 to tan.

  5. I agree, I am also very glad that this law was banned. I think it's awful how many young girls think they need to go tanning. But I also feel that it is partially the parents fault for accepting that and letting them cave in. It's hard to believe that people are so stubborn and wont quit what is going to kill them in the near future. Yes, they may look pretty now with darker golden skin, but when their 40 it's going to be a completly different story.
